When Music Becomes Meaning

Music has a remarkable way of reaching places that ordinary conversation sometimes cannot.

A song can transport us back to a specific moment in time. It can bring tears to our eyes, remind us of someone we love, or help us find words for emotions we didn't even realize we were carrying.

For many people, music isn't simply entertainment.

It's a way of making sense of life.

As a medium and Clarity & Wellness Practitioner, I've had the privilege of hearing countless stories about the healing power of music. One experience, however, has stayed with me for many years because it beautifully illustrates how creativity can reveal meaning when we least expect it.

A Session I'll Never Forget

A well-known musician came to see me for a session after hearing about my work from a friend.

Like many people, he arrived curious but unsure of what to expect. He saw the session as an opportunity to step away from the demands of a busy career and simply be present for himself.

As the session unfolded, messages began to come through that deeply resonated with him. Then the conversation shifted toward his father.

As I described the communication I was receiving, I began speaking about a particular song he had recently written—one that hadn't yet been released.

He immediately recognized it.

He explained that the song felt completely different from anything he had written before. It seemed to arrive unexpectedly, almost as though it had written itself. At the time, he couldn't fully explain why he had created it.

As we continued exploring its meaning, something shifted.

He came to understand the song in an entirely new way.

From his perspective, the lyrics carried the words his father had never been able to say during his lifetime.

Whether someone understands that experience through the lens of mediumship, intuition, the subconscious mind, or the mysterious nature of creativity, what mattered most was the healing it brought.

That moment changed the way he understood his own music.

Sometimes We Understand Our Work Later

One of the fascinating things about creativity is that we don't always know why we're creating something while we're creating it.

A writer may finish a book and only later recognize that it reflected their own healing journey.

An artist may paint the same colours repeatedly before realizing what they represented.

A musician may write lyrics that take on entirely new meaning months or years later.

Sometimes our creative work speaks before we do.

Creativity Helps Us Process What Words Cannot

Many people have experienced moments when music expressed exactly what they were feeling, even though they couldn't find the words themselves.

Creativity often gives shape to emotions that feel difficult to explain.

Grief.

Love.

Hope.

Regret.

Forgiveness.

Longing.

Joy.

Whether we create or simply listen, music has an extraordinary ability to help us process life's most meaningful experiences.

Meaning Is Personal

Over the years, I've learned that meaning is deeply personal.

The same song may remind one person of falling in love and another of saying goodbye.

A painting may represent freedom to one viewer and loss to another.

There isn't always one correct interpretation.

Sometimes the meaning we discover says as much about where we are in our lives as it does about the work itself.

That's one of the beautiful gifts of creativity.

It continues to meet us as we grow.

A Clarity & Wellness Perspective

People sometimes ask whether creativity comes from intuition, inspiration, life experience, or something beyond ourselves.

My answer is that meaningful experiences don't always need to fit neatly into one explanation.

Some people experience creativity as a spiritual connection.

Others understand it through psychology, memory, or the subconscious mind.

Many experience a combination of both.

Rather than focusing on where creativity comes from, I find myself more interested in what it reveals.

What is this piece trying to teach me?

What emotion is asking to be acknowledged?

What truth am I finally ready to hear?

Sometimes the greatest gift of creativity isn't what we produce.

It's the meaning we discover along the way.

Reflection

Take a few moments to reflect:

  • Has a piece of music ever helped you understand something about yourself?
  • Have you ever created something that surprised you?
  • Is there a song that reminds you of someone you love?
  • What creative expression has helped you through a difficult season?
  • What meaning might you discover if you revisited something you created years ago?

Creativity has a way of revealing meaning in its own time.

Sometimes we don't fully understand the message until we're ready to receive it.
