How to Protect Your Energy When You Feel Drained or Overwhelmed

Have you ever spent time with someone and left feeling unusually tired, tense, unsettled, or emotionally heavy?

Perhaps you entered a crowded room and immediately felt overwhelmed. Maybe a difficult conversation stayed with you long after it ended, or you noticed yourself carrying emotions that didn't seem to belong entirely to you.

Some people describe these experiences as absorbing negative energy or experiencing a psychic attack. Others understand them through stress, nervous system activation, emotional sensitivity, interpersonal tension, or sensory overload.

From a Clarity & Wellness perspective, you don't need to determine with certainty where the feeling came from before caring for yourself.

The most important thing is learning to notice what affects your wellbeing, return to yourself, and create boundaries that help you feel grounded and secure.

What Do People Mean by a Psychic Attack?

The phrase psychic attack is commonly used to describe the feeling that another person's anger, jealousy, resentment, thoughts, or emotional energy is negatively affecting you.

For some people, this is understood as a spiritual or energetic experience.

For others, the same feeling may arise from being highly aware of body language, tension, conflict, criticism, or changes in another person's mood. Our nervous systems continually receive information from our surroundings, often before our conscious minds fully understand what has changed.

There may also be times when we feel exhausted, anxious, unwell, or emotionally unsettled for reasons unrelated to another person's energy.

Stress, lack of sleep, illness, grief, hormonal changes, medication, sensory overload, and difficult life circumstances can all affect how we feel.

Rather than immediately deciding that someone is attacking you energetically, begin with curiosity.

Ask yourself what else may be contributing to the experience and what kind of support your mind and body need.

Recognizing When an Environment or Relationship Affects You

You may notice that certain people, conversations, or environments leave you feeling:

  • tense or emotionally depleted
  • overstimulated or unable to concentrate
  • unusually self-conscious
  • responsible for someone else's emotions
  • unsettled long after an interaction
  • pressured to ignore your own needs
  • disconnected from your intuition or inner clarity

These feelings don't necessarily mean someone has intentionally directed harmful energy toward you.

They may be telling you that the situation feels emotionally unsafe, overwhelming, demanding, or out of alignment with your needs and values.

That awareness matters.

You don't need to prove that someone is negative before giving yourself permission to step back, rest, or establish a boundary.

Ground Yourself in the Present Moment

Grounding helps bring your attention away from fear, overthinking, or emotional overwhelm and back into your present experience.

You might place both feet on the floor and notice the support beneath you. Take a few slow breaths and gently name what you can see, hear, and physically feel.

You can also imagine roots extending from your feet into the earth if that visualization feels meaningful to you.

The purpose of grounding isn't to fight an invisible force.

It's to remind your mind and body:

I am here. I am safe in this moment. I can choose how I respond.

Use Visualization as a Personal Boundary

Some people find energetic protection visualizations calming and supportive.

You might imagine yourself surrounded by soft white light, a transparent bubble, or another image that helps you feel peaceful and contained.

Rather than picturing yourself under attack, imagine the visualization as a boundary.

You can care about another person without carrying everything they feel.

You can remain compassionate without becoming emotionally responsible for them.

You can be present without abandoning yourself.

A simple intention might be:

I can remain connected to myself while allowing others to have their own experiences.

Pay Attention to Your Body

Your body often notices discomfort before your mind can explain it.

You may feel your shoulders tighten, your breathing change, your stomach become unsettled, or your energy begin to drop during a particular interaction.

Instead of dismissing these sensations or automatically interpreting them as spiritual danger, become curious about what your body may be communicating.

Are you tired?

Do you feel pressured?

Is the conversation crossing a boundary?

Are you trying to manage someone else's reaction?

Do you need food, water, movement, quiet, or rest?

Listening to your body can help you respond with greater clarity rather than fear.

Create Clear and Compassionate Boundaries

One of the most practical ways to protect your energy is through healthy boundaries.

A boundary may look like ending a conversation that has become disrespectful, limiting time with someone who regularly overwhelms you, declining an invitation, turning off your phone, or deciding that a particular subject is no longer open for discussion.

Boundaries are not punishments.

They clarify what you are available for and what you need in order to remain well.

You don't need to justify every boundary or wait until you're completely depleted before creating one.

Be Intentional About the People Around You

Consider how you feel in your relationships.

Do you feel respected and accepted?

Can you express your needs?

Are you allowed to disagree?

Does the relationship include mutual care, or are you consistently expected to give more than you receive?

No relationship will feel easy all the time, but healthy connections should not require you to continually abandon yourself.

Protecting your energy may sometimes mean creating distance. At other times, it may mean having an honest conversation, changing a pattern, or asking for support.

Develop a Clearing Ritual That Feels Supportive

A personal ritual can help mark the transition between a demanding experience and your return to yourself.

You might take a shower, change your clothes, open a window, tidy your space, journal, listen to calming music, spend time outdoors, or visualize the emotional heaviness leaving your body.

One visualization I enjoy is standing outside and imagining the breeze carrying away stress and emotional weight. I picture that heaviness transforming into butterflies and gently moving into the distance.

The value of a ritual isn't that it has to remove something supernatural.

Its value may come from helping your nervous system recognize that the difficult moment has ended and that you are returning to a calmer, more familiar state.

Crystals, Salt Baths, and Spiritual Practices

Some people find crystals, baths, prayer, meditation, Reiki, or other spiritual practices meaningful.

Crystals such as black tourmaline, obsidian, or hematite are often associated with grounding and protection in spiritual traditions. While they should not replace medical or mental health support, they may serve as comforting reminders of your intentions and boundaries.

A warm bath may also feel calming, although it is important to consider your personal health needs before adding salts, essential oils, or other products.

When using spiritual practices connected to a particular culture or tradition, take time to learn about their origins and approach them respectfully.

Choose practices that help you feel calmer, clearer, and more connected to yourself rather than increasing fear about what may be around you.

When to Seek Additional Support

Feeling tired, anxious, physically unwell, confused, fearful, or emotionally overwhelmed does not automatically mean you are experiencing negative energy or a psychic attack.

If symptoms are persistent, intense, new, or interfering with your daily life, speak with an appropriate healthcare or mental health professional.

Seeking practical support does not dismiss your spiritual beliefs.

You can honour your intuition while also considering your physical health, emotional wellbeing, stress level, relationships, and environment.

A grounded spiritual practice leaves room for all of these possibilities.

A Clarity & Wellness Perspective

Protecting your energy isn't about becoming afraid of other people or constantly searching for signs that someone wishes you harm.

It's about knowing yourself well enough to recognize when something doesn't feel supportive.

It's learning how to pause before absorbing another person's emotions.

It's understanding that empathy does not require over-responsibility.

It's remembering that you can be kind without giving everyone unlimited access to your time, attention, or emotional energy.

You don't always need to identify exactly what caused the heaviness before choosing to release it.

Sometimes the most empowering response is simply:

This doesn't feel like mine to carry. I am returning to myself.

Reflection

Consider a recent interaction or environment that left you feeling drained.

What did you notice in your body?

Were you honouring your own needs, or were you focused entirely on managing someone else's experience?

What boundary, grounding practice, or moment of rest might help you feel more like yourself again?

Protecting your energy may begin with something much simpler than building a shield.

It may begin with listening to yourself.
